July 17th 2011–Cleaning Day (0 KM)

Last night did not end until about 0100 in the morning.  After a long ride from Deadhorse to Fairbanks we desperately needed showers and then of course we we wired and it was difficult to get to sleep before about 0100.

I was up at the crack of dawn as per my usual routine and Cheryl slept in to about 0830.  I did  laundry and the BLOG before breakfast.

We met Ray and walked down to the Sourdough for breakfast but first all of us unanimously decided we needed to do this before we even ate.

Ray’s bike.  We will be saying our good bye’s to Ray tomorrow as he heads towards BC, Canada and we head towards Denali Highway.

Quick stop at Lowes about 5 KM away from the dorms for more cleaning stuff and batteries for my SPOT

Back at the dorm we all did a little detailing on the bikes to make them look somewhat cleaner.  Ray and Cheryl did a better job than Leslie.  Leslie gets bored doing this stuff.

Cheryl’s bike cleaner and chain sort of cleaned and lube.  Ran out of chain cleaner will have to pick up some soon.  We do not use gas or WD40.

After the in the parking lot detail of the bikes, we took naps. We sleep so hard that we both thought it was tomorrow.  Woke up and what do we do?  Need to eat again.  Back out with Ray to the Sourdough again for a tasty dinner and dorm room time to relax and get ready to our departure of Fairbanks once and for all to head to the Denali Highway, another off road event to get to Denali the park.  Back tracking a little but we have time and our clean bikes will become a mess again because more rain is predicted for tomorrow. Today, nothing but sunshine because we were not riding the bikes.

Have to walk up these stairs to get to our dorm. Good thing after the meal we just ate.  Now, sort of planning the next part trip and playing it day to by day.

Deadhorse to Fairbanks (800 KM) in ONE day!

July 16th 2011

Observation:  The employees who work in Deadhorse, the staff at the hotel were all so polite and respectful.  The hotel was super clean, The Prudhoe Bay Hotel that is, everyone opens and closes doors for you. No booze in town, hard working folks from all over the world made for just a nice short visit.

When we set out this morning we thought to ourselves why not try and get back to Fairbanks in one day?  I mean it is only 800 KM of riding in unknown weather conditions as well as how the Dalton would be on the way down.  I checked the weather before we left Deadhorse and it said moderate rain outside Deadhorse all the way to Coldfoot.  That made it less promising that we could make it all the down but in the end we did.  What a day of riding this was.
