Animals Illuminated by the Sun

April 14, 2012 By

The time of sunset is defined in astronomy as the moment when the trailing edge of the Sun’s disk disappears below the horizon in the west. There are few things in nature as photogenic as the sky at sunset, especially animals. The rich bright gold, pink and orange colors make unusually beautiful pictures of animals illuminated by the sun.

21 Endangered Animals you should see before they’re gone

By On December 5, 2012 ·
The earth’s current rate of extinction is greater than at any other time since the dinosaurs disappeared around 65 million years ago.

THE NATURAL EXTINCTION RATE (aka background rate) describes how fast plants, mammals, birds, insects, etc. would die off if humans weren’t around. Scientists state that today species are disappearing at almost 1,000 times the natural rate, meaning we’re losing around 150-200 species every day. Close to 15% of mammal species and 11% of bird species are currently listed as threatened with extinction.

With an increasing human population, more and more land is being appropriated to develop cities, acquire natural resources, and build farms, amongst other reasons. This means loss of habitat for many animal species. In addition to this, other beings need to contend with human-caused disasters such as oil spills, climate change, and acid rain. And on top of that there’s the issue of over-hunting / -fishing and poaching to sustain an illegal market that trades in animals. Continue reading

Flying over the Tulips Fields

Anna Paulowna
There is a Tulip Festival every year not far from us in Washington State called the SKAGIT TULIP FESTIVAL
While we have only attended once it was incredible and this post just reminded maybe 2013 is the year we go back in April.
Flying over the Tulips Fields in Anna Paulowna a municipality and a town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland.
The tulip has come to be a loved symbol of the Netherlands. Many tourists visit the country just to see the bright coloured flower and the astonishing view over the bulb fields. The season begins in March with crocuses, followed by the daffodil and the yellow narcissi. In April the hyacinths and tulips blosssom to some time in mid May, depending on the weather. Later, in August it is time for the gladioli. Even when spring is over, the Netherlands is still a garden, visitors can enjoy flowers in the Netherlands all year round.
In the 20th century, the bulb flower business continued to boom, resulting in the establishment of auction and trading houses, large-scale cultivators and cooperatives. Today, The Netherlands exports bulbflowers in large quantities to over a hundred countries worldwide.

Canon SX50 HS Review

While I never claim to be a photographer I am always looking for something to make my life easier.  Cheryl bought me this camera for Christmas 2012 and I have to say so far so good for a “Superzoom”.  Read an experts view because that I am not. ;-)   If you look at my most recent post from January 15, 2012 you will see some of the pics this can take.  The zoom is amazing to be honest and any wild life you see I take means the bird etc are usually FAR FAR away.

Oh No, Not Another Superzoom!

OK, I admit it. I have a soft spot for so-called Superzoom cameras and have reviewed quite a few of them on these pages over the years. I have looked at even more than I have reviewed, and found most (read – all) wanting, usually in the area of image quality.

The new Canon SX50 HS was announced at Photokina in September, 2012, started shipping in October at a SMLP of $480, and by early November had dropped to $369 at some US  retailers. This means a drop of at least -20% during its first month on sale. Who knows how many of these ended up as stocking-stuffers by Christmas. Continue reading
