8 Amazing Drowned Buildings


Buildings of different purposes, rising out of lakes and rivers, submerged in gallons of water – the places where people once lived and worked, a homes to weeds and fishes now. These buildings were flooded and drowned by men’s own doing, in their hurry to change nature’s path for dams and reservoirs. Churches, monasteries, palaces and fortresses are usually occur as partly-submerged structures, which are popular among photographers and tourists.

The church of St. Nicholas in Mavrovo, Macedonia was built in 1850 and stood for a 153 years until it was decided an artificial lake was needed in the village. At one point the church was fully submerged, but it keeps rising again, especially in summer with the droughts of the 21st century. [link, map] Continue reading →

National Geographic Photo Contest 2012, Part II


The deadline to enter this year’s National Geographic photo contest is coming up — this Friday, November 30. Back in September, the society started gathering and presenting galleries of submissions, encouraging readers to vote for them as well. Winners will be chosen on or around December 15, 2012. Hurricane Sandy: After Landfall (October 30, 2012)


BRUTAL STORM OF MY LIFETIME! SOURCE: The Atlantic

Last night, Hurricane Sandy — the largest Atlantic tropical system on record — made landfall just south of Atlantic City, New Jersey, bringing winds up to 90 mph (150 kph), and pushing a massive storm surge onto beaches and shorelines. At least 12 deaths have been reported in the United States. These fatalities, when added to the previous toll in the Caribbean, leave Sandy responsible for more taking more than 80 lives to date.

Millions across the Eastern Seaboard are now without power, and even more are struggling with rising floodwater. Sandy continues northward, now downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone, and those affected are now assessing the damage. Collected here are images of Sandy’s aftermath, many from New York City, which suffered widespread blackouts and a record-setting high tide early this morning. Cute Baby Bears: Born to Be Wild!

Bear, a large, heavily built mammal with shaggy fur and a short tail. Formerly, bears were widely found in the northern forests of Europe, Asia, and North America. Due to intensive clearing of land for farms, they now live only in remote areas, in forests and on mountains. Bears are hunted for their pelts and meat. Unprovoked attacks on humans are rare, but all bears are dangerous when wounded or when their cubs are threatened. Because of their playfulness, bears are popular with visitors at zoos. There are many stories about bears—especially children’s stories, such as the familiar “Three Bears.” Small children often have toy bears, called teddy bears (named after Theodore Roosevelt, who was a noted bear hunter). American Indians regarded bears as supernatural, and some primitive peoples, such as the Ainu of Japan, for example, worshiped bears.

SCENES FROM ANTARCTICA

Summer is returning to Antarctica and researcher teams from around the world are heading south for the (relatively) warm season. Among them are members of a Russian team that drilled into Lake Vostok last February. Vostok is a subglacial lake some 4,000 meters below the surface of the ice, and the plan is to send a robot down there this summer to collect water samples and sediments from the bottom. Research also continues at the South Pole Telescope, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, and dozens of other locations around Antarctica. Gathered here are recent images of Antarctica, its environment, and some of the scientific work taking place there. [37 photos]
